biography

George Emilio Sanchez is a writer, performance artist and social justice activist.  Since 2019 he has been making original performance pieces for his series, “Performing the Constitution.”  In March 2022 he will premiere the next installment titled, In the Court of the Conqueror, which will be presented in New York, New Hampshire, Colorado and Oklahoma. This solo performance work revolves around the 200 year-old history of Supreme Court rulings that have diminished the Tribal Sovereignty of Native Nations in the US.  It also delves into his upbringing in an Ecuadorian immigrant household and the embedded prejudice towards indigenous people.  sanchez was named the Keith Haring Artist Fellow of The MacDowell in 2021 and also serves as a Social Practice Artist-in-Residence at Abrons Arts Center in Manhattan.  He teaches at the City University of New York’s College of Staten Island in the Performing and Creative Arts Department.  He recently received a Masters in Legal Studies for Indigenous Peoples Law out of the University of Oklahoma.
